Review & Giveaway: A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures

The boys and I recently had the opportunity to review the children’s movie A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure. The movie follows the life of Sammy the sea turtle: from the time he is born, in 1959, until he is a grandfather turtle 50 years later. The film focuses on the friendship between Sammy and his best friend Ray, as well as Sammy’s search for his “true love” Shelly, all while providing the backdrop for a conversation about conservation. It is geared towards children ages 2-6 years old and stars Melanie Griffith, Kathy Griffin, Tim Curry, Anthony Anderson, and Stacy Keach.

Now, the movie is rated PG, which gave me pause for a moment. It shouldn’t have though. It says the rating is for “mild peril” but the Menininho didn’t blink an eye. I honestly don’t understand our rating system…there were a lot more scary scenes in some G rated movies that I grew up with. Anyway: I think this movie is not too scary for the age range it’s created for.

My only real issue with the movie is the focus on the relationship between Sammy and Shelly. For a kids’ movie, I’d have preferred the focus on the friendship between Sammy and Ray, and not Sammy searching for Shelly. Plenty of time in life for romantic story lines, you know?

Outside of that though, this was such a cute movie! M actually sat still, watching the movie for a full hour (the movie is 86 minutes). He doesn’t sit that long watching something, um, ever, so I knew we had a winner! The movie kept me engaged as well, and a lot of kids’ shows don’t. Plus, the soundtrack, which features Michael Jackson (!) and The Mamas & The Papas, is terrific. I wish I’d gotten video of Baby J dancing along to it with me: he was so cute! Finally, the movie had lots of opportunities for talking points with M: we labeled different animals that appeared, reviewed points in the story line, and I pointed out some of the things that humans which hurt the animals.

Bottom line? A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures gets a thumbs up from M and me!
