Musings of a Marfan Mom

Introducing the Big Boy Bed

I don’t know why, maybe it was because M. tried climbing out of his crib for the upteenth time during a particularly bad tantrum on Friday night, but I asked him if he wanted a big boy bed like Mommy and Daddy and he said yes, so we took him at his word. I mean, I wasn’t even sure if he understood what I was asking but Mark and I had been hemming and hawing over the best time to introduce the toddler bed so why not just go for it? By Saturday night Mark had set up the bed in M’s room, right by his crib. I think M. would have slept in the bed too, but I wanted to see how he handled sleeping there during the day first, when I’d actually be awake.

At nap time yesterday Mark put all of M’s many blankies and stuffed animals into the bed and M eagerly climbed in. He was asleep within 10 minutes (putting him down for nap an hour late probably had something to do with that). He did wake up partway through his nap, as usual, but just head-banged himself back to sleep. Surprisingly, he didn’t even get out of bed when he finished his nap; he screamed and head-banged till I came to get him.

So, we felt comfortable letting him sleep in his big boy bed Sunday night when he picked it over sleeping in his crib. I was not expecting the transition to be this easy! I’m still a little skeptical; we’ll see how today goes, but so far, so good!!!

  1. While Savanna has been in a toddler bed for about 4 months now, she only a month ago figured out she could get out of it without me. I think it was the fact that she couldn’t get out of her crib without my help, so she just assumed the same was true for the bed. I was happy because this made the transition easier! Maybe M will do the same! It’s nice when they don’t get out of their bed. :) however, now, Savanna does get out and try to explore when she should be sleeping. I’ve considered turning the lock on teh outside of her door to lock her in her room, but I don’t want to discourage her from going to the potty if she needs to. But for now she gets out and comes wakes me up all the time! Gr. :)

  3. For some reason, our transition went off without a hitch. Ella’s been sleeping in her twin bed for several months now, and is still a fantastic sleeper. No complaints, here! Hopefully M keeps up the good work! :)
