Musings of a Marfan Mom

Birthday Cakes

I’m not a fabulous cook by any stretch, but I have fun with birthday cakes. This year M. got 2 cakes: frog cupcakes for his school party and a cat cake (he is really into cats) for his family party. Maybe someday I’ll be able to take a cake decorating class so I can learn to ice a cake properly!

  1. The cat cake turned out really good!!!!! The trick to icing is using a floppy icing knife they call it, I have one that’s really old but its super flexible and makes putting on the icing a lot easier.

  2. super cute! you have such good ideas. Do you mind if I steal your cat cake? I like the cat a lot. I’d recommend freezing the cake before you frost so the crumbs don’t get mixed with your frosting. Cake Boss does a dirty frosting layer, refridgerates and then an extra coat …or use chocolate. What kid doesn’t like chocolate?!

Oooo freezing the cake is a good idea, thanks! Any idea how long to freeze it for? I had originally planned to use chocolate but had leftover icing from the cupcakes, so didn’t want to put it to waste. :-)

  3. He is a lucky little boy. I bet his friends loved the frogs and M enjoyed the attention. Boy has he grown up in the past 6 months. Hugs and love. And I plan on stealing the cat idea as well.

  4. Also you can put on a “crumb coat” first. You just put a thin layer of regular icing and let it set then ice it for real. It has worked for me in the past.

  5. Happy Birthday M! Dirty coats and icing knives. Yup, that’s the trick. It looks awesome though, and makes it look like fur. I think it’s great..

  6. I LOVE decorating…all of the above are great ideas. The other helpful thing…two layers of icing. First a “dirty Layer” where you don’t worry about crumbs…then let that harden a little and add the Clean layer. And the spatulas’ or “floppy knife” do make it much easier…and you can get them at michael’s with a 40% off coupon pretty cheap.

But I personally think you did a great job! And the frog cupcakes are ADORABLE! You are such an awesome mom!
