39 Week Update

Today is going to be an awesome day. Why? M. has the day off speech therapy and I have no doctors’ appointments! What a great way to celebrate hitting 39 weeks! Know what would be an even better way to celebrate 39 weeks? Having this baby!

I wasn’t in a rush before. I really don’t mind being pregnant, especially because this is definitely our last biological child. I also feel incredibly lucky to have made it to 39 weeks. Who thought that was going to happen? Not me! While I occasionally feel like a squishy manatee, I love my big belly and I’m really going to miss it.

But my OB lied again. He’d promised that I wouldn’t need an induction/c-section just because I hit 41 weeks. Then on Tuesday he told me he doesn’t want me going past 40.5 weeks and next week we’ll need to schedule my foley catheter induction or c-section. Why? No reason. That’s just what he feels safer doing. It has nothing to do with Smudge (whose last 4 or 5 NSTs and AFIs have been called “perfect”) or me (whose blood pressure is still a gorgeous 110/60 on average).

My back is killing me…I have to use a wheelchair to get around the store. I’m really excited to meet this little guy. I’m not agreeing to getting induced at 40.5 weeks just because I hit 40.5 weeks though. I want to wait till at least 41 weeks before looking at stripping my membranes. I’m prepared to argue with my OB next week but dreading it. My understanding is that foley cath inductions are not as effective as pitocin inductions (which I can’t have, doing VBAC) and with all the Marfan risks associated with surgery I don’t want to be pushed into a c-section without cause.

So, please join me in wishing this baby out before my next appt. (the 9th). 🙂 I’ll be passing this week by taking walks and eating as much pineapple as I can stomach. If you have any simple natural induction suggestions, please leave them in the comments! (Note: I know about evening primrose oil, raspberry leaf tea, and the cohoshes, but all are contraindicated with my medications.)

Thanksgiving 2010

I was pretty down about missing Thanksgiving with the in-laws this year. I thought instead of our bustling Italian dinner of close to 30 people we’d be having a quiet meal of 4: Mark, my grandmother, M., and me. Luckily, some friends of ours invited us over.

We kicked the morning off with Turkey Bowl 2010 at church. The Menininho really wanted to play with the grownups…maybe next year! He definitely kept his Bisa (great-grandmother) on her toes as she tried to keep him from diving into the game. I played photographer for the event.

The afternoon was spent getting ready for the dinner. I made my aunt’s famous cranberry salad, a Thanksgiving staple, and Mark and my grandmother prepared Mom’s green beans. Did you know on the West Coast, they play the Macy’s parade twice? I loved showing it to M.!

There were 5 couples, 2 extended family members, 6 children, and 2 fetuses at the dinner. I don’t know how we all fit into the apartment! The highlight of my evening was watching M. interact with the other kids. Usually he is doing his own thing in some other part of the room, but that evening he followed around the older kids for most of the night. Mark and I were so proud!

The food was amazing too. Seriously…best oven baked turkey I’ve ever had. I am not a big meat eater and I had 3 helpings! I’m grateful the baby has dropped so I had room in my belly for all that food, haha. It was nice to celebrate Thanksgiving a new way this year, with other families our age, and I really appreciate the invitation.

Our lovely and gracious hosts

I'm convinced Thanksgiving exists simply as an excuse to overindulge in pie.
